Shipping Questionaire
Aug. 8th, 2018 03:48 pmFollowing Okapi.
This was surprisingly difficult and I couldn’t answer some of the questions cause I’ve never thought about it before. It’ll be interesting to fill this out again in a year or two and see how my answers change.
First ship you ever read fic for: ACD Watson/Holmes
First ship you ever wrote fic for: ACD Watson/Holmes. It took me a bit to decide if I personally wanted to ship them, if I wanted to write about it, and if I cared either way. Also, there were those odd guilty feelings during the decision process (which is mostly gone now).
Ship you write the most now: Holmes/Watson
Ship you read the most now: As of this exact moment, it’s BBC Sherlock/John. I prefer ACD Watson/Holmes, but I was looking for longer fics and got drawn into the BBC fandom because they have novels galore.
Newest ship: Aziraphale/Crowley from Good Omens imagining them as Sheen and Tennat, respectively.
Rare ship you wanna read more of: none
Your taboo ship: Maybe not taboo, but I do not like anyone shipped with Moriarty (especially the BBC version). The few things I’ve read just makes my skin crawl and I feel sick, so I’m avoiding it. But, that does not mean I will tell someone not to ship it. I will just keep on scrolling by.
They never met in canon ship: none.
How does this work? How do you know how’ll they’ll interact? It’s not in canon and they might hate each other. (Or is this when I get patted on the head and told ‘you make it up however you want’?)
Your unexpected ship: It bothers me when the ‘wife problem’ is answered by having Watson cheat on Mary to have Holmes and Watson together pre-hiatus and post-Mary. Now, if some authors are writing about the experience of gay men during that time and using Mary as a blind… Well, it’s interesting to read about those characters would handle that situation, but it still bothers me. (Again, I’m not going to tell someone not to do that if that is their preferred ship or whatever). I prefer having Watson devoted and loving to Mary before the hiatus, and then shipping Holmes/Watson afterwards.
That said, Holmes/Watson/Morstan that Okapi writes in their quiver verse is my unexpected exception because of the respect and consent shown between the characters and their version of love in this fictional verse. But, only in this verse and by that particular author. Nope, I’m not picky or anything ;P
The ship you always forget to give love to: none?
A ship you’re embarrassed to ship: How about being embarrassed to ship in general and having long, overly complicated thoughts about the subject because that isn’t what I typically think of.
Your most romantic ship: retirement Holmes/Watson in an established relationship
Your sexiest ship: Uhhh… Holmes/Watson
Your most tragic ship: Holmes/Victor Trevor or the same ship in BBC pre-S4 before we knew the identity of redbeard.
A ship you want more content for: Holmes/Watson in works that are over 40K, which I realize is a lot to ask for since that is a lot of writing. But! On AO3, I’ve already read most of the ones that are 40K+ and would like some more.

Especially since most are not canonically gay anyway. Quite often both will have certain needs which are met by the other and from there the relationship will grow.

Lol. Ok, yes, don't mind me, I like my canon box with it's semi-flexible walls and already pre-determined structure. t'll be neat to see if that changes after a while.

Date: 2018-08-08 10:04 pm (UTC)I just make it up (how 2 characters who don't meet in canon act). I think people have different attitudes about canon and how loyal you should be to canon. But following the example of our lord and savior ACD, I don't worry too much about it and just try to tell a good story.
What to do with Mary is always a problem. I tend to go your route unless I want Holmes & Watson together-forever early for some reason, then I just ignore her. But yeah a straight-up cheating fic is not my idea of a good time.
Nice to learn about you!

Date: 2018-08-09 04:22 pm (UTC)2 characters who don't meet Yes! How loyal to be to canon is another piece I've been thinking about (but didn't know about it entirely). Right now, I feel more comfortable with guides of some sort.
I forgot about treating her as something Watson wrote in because his editor told him too since he was describing Holmes' hands too much.
Thanks! :)

Date: 2018-08-12 07:29 pm (UTC)I can absolutely understand this - after starting to read fanfics, it took me a while to get my feelings on shipping sorted out. When I was young, I would ship characters (and real people too to be honest) in my head all the time. But seeing it all set out into proper stories as a middle-aged person... I enjoyed fics that involved shipping from the beginning but there were some conflicted feelings for a time ^___^

Date: 2018-08-13 06:41 pm (UTC)I enjoyed reading shipping fics almost from the beginning as well (once I figured out what was going on). But, man, writing one took guts for some reason.
